Understanding
mental health
According to WHO (2026) “Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.
Mental health is not reduced by the presence or absence of a mental disorder and can be defined as a continuous state ranging from low wellbeing to high wellbeing. By facing specific vulnerabilities like academic pressure, adapting to a new environment, facing loneliness and sometimes moving to a foreign city or country, students are particularly at risk. These specificities can affect students' health and wellbeing, making them unable to “cope” with these difficulties.
Mental health is not solely a health issue, but a collective and systemic one, shaped by broader structural determinants such as inequality, poverty, and social environment.
